The first ever Ontario Outstanding Dairy Woman Award has been given to an Owen Sound resident.
Heather Parkin was presented with the award in Belleville during a meeting of the Ontario Holstein Branch – of which she was the first female president.
Parkin and her husband Larry run a dairy operation near Owen Sound.
Parkin has also been active in Grey County 4-H.
She says she grew up on a dairy farm and has spent most of her life in agriculture.
Parkin says she was nominated by some dairy farmers in the Goderich area – there were 12 nominees altogether.
Parkin says winning the award was very emotional and she was very surprised to win it.
When asked if she would like to win another award, Parkin says while it is satisfying to have the admiration of her peers – she does not do what she does just to win awards.
