An active volunteer from Saugeen Shores is this year’s recipient of the Woman of Distinction Award from the Women’s House Serving Grey Bruce.
Lorraine Boucher says she was shocked to actually win the award last Friday at the CAW in Port Elgin, during the organization’s annual celebration of International Women’s Day.
The event was attended by 230 people and raised 10 thousand dollars for the Women’s House.
Boucher says her friend and fellow volunteer Katherine Parr had nominated her, in a year where the Women’s House had received the most nominations ever for the award.
Boucher says it makes her feel like she’s “walking on water,” but at the same time wants to recognize her fellow nominees as she says they are all amazing women.
Boucher and her husband moved to the community in 1999 to retire, and she says they decided then to give back to the community as they didn’t really have time to when raising a family.
She says they stay so busy, she doesn’t believe in the idea that retirees just sit at home all day.
Boucher first started out helping at the elementary schools, then became heavily involved in the new French school in Owen Sound, mentoring teachers and working as a part-time special education teacher.
She also got involved with the Shoreline Artists and the Chambettes, and she helps her husband out with whatever he is volunteering with at the time.
