The disaster unfolding in the nuclear industry in Japan will likely be an “economical disaster” according to Bruce Power President and CEO Duncan Hawthorne.
Hawthorne tells Bayshore Broadcasting News he has been in direct contact with officials in Japan — and Hawthorne feels the media reports on the situation are misleading.
Although there was an explosion that destroyed a building housing a nuclear reactor in Japan today, he says the containment vessel is in tact and no radiation is leaking out.
The Bruce Power boss believes the next step by the Japanese will be to flood the containment area with sea-water.
Hawthorne says that will effectively put an end to any concerns about an overheating reactor, or nuclear radiation leaks.
However, he says it will make the power plant worthless.
He says when it is all over, the disaster will look similar to Three Mile Island in the U.S. which saw no radiation leak, but was an economic disaster for the nuclear industry.
