The intersection at Scone will be reconstructed this year by Grey and Bruce Counties.
Traffic lights will be installed as part of the project — which is expected to cost at least 1.2 million dollars — and the cost will be equally shared by both counties.
It’s an extension of the recent reconstruction of the Grey-Bruce Line between Scone and Alvanley.
Grey County Director of Transportation Gary Shaw says the rebuilding of that road is leading to higher traffic volumes so it makes sense to now revamp the major intersection at the south end of that stretch of pavement.
Grey County’s first priority for this year had been to finish putting the top coat of asphalt on the last 13 or so kilometres of the county line — but Bruce County asked to consider the intersection instead and defer the paving until 2012.
Both counties looked at the possibility of a roundabout at Scone — but Shaw says there’s not enough room to properly configure such a design.
It was only recently decided to add traffic lights due to stopping sight distances and truck turning movements.
Currently, the intersection is controlled only by stop signs for vehicles traveling north and south.
