Georgian College is installing state of art software and there’s a possibility that cleanup operations for the world’s next major oil spill will be directed from Owen Sound.
The cutting edge technology works in conjunction with the 8 million dollar marine simulator at Georgian College.
Teacher, Captain Peter Buell says they will be able to direct clean up crews on where their booms should be deployed and how ships in the affected area should maneouver to avoid making things worse.
The college has software covering harbours around the world and it will be possible to assist with — or direct operations on any of our coasts including the Great Lakes as well as in the Gulf of Mexico and other global locations.
The Owen Sound campus has the most advanced simulators in the world for its marine navigation and marine engineering programs.
The new software is worth approximately 100 thousand dollars, and Buell says industry would pay for use of the equipment in the event of a major spill.
It should be fully operational by late spring or early summer.
