Bruce Power has to appear before a Commons Committee to review the shipment of decommissioned steam generators to Sweden for recycling.
The Tiverton-based nuclear company was granted a license last week for the transport of the low-level radioactive material.
Spokesperson John Peevers says they’ve been asked to present some information to the Committee on Natural Resources and he says they welcome the opportunity.
Peevers says there are a lot of questions out there, and Bruce Power wants to get out the correct information.
Peevers wouldn’t say if it will affect the timeline for shipment, because he says they don’t really have a firm timeline in place.
Meanwhile, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission is defending its decision to allow the shipment, saying there has been fear-mongering about the issue.
CNSC officials say the risks from the shipment of the 16 generators are minimal — they say even the worst accident imaginable wouldn’t expose people to hazardous amounts of radiations.
The Bloc Quebecois is the latest to oppose the move, saying the province should have control over what is shipped on the St Lawrence.
But the commission says thousands of shipments of radioactive medical isotopes and other substances routinely go through Montreal every year.
