A couple of Bruce County women are amongst the Faces of Farming.
The Ontario Farm Animal Council’s 2011 calendar is out, and Jen Legge of Chesley, along with her sister Amy Trelford of Paisley are the faces for the month of May.
What’s interesting is that Legge and her sister didn’t grow up on a farm.
Raised in Port Elgin, they both discovered farming later in life.
Trelford starting dating her husband when she was 15, and learned farming through his family.
Legge went to the University of Western Ontario after high school to study biology, and from there transferred to horticulture.
She then attended Agriculture college in Guelph, and then she met her husband who is also a farmer.
Legge says the calendar’s distribution is mainly to the urban centres, to teach city people more about farming.
She says there are many misconceptions about farmers and what it is they do and she hopes to change some of those opinions.
The sisters were recommended for the calendar by their aunt in Toronto.
The calendar is now in its sixth year of printing, and this year, seven thousand copies were printed — more than double last year’s distribution.
And the calendar is almost completely sold out.
