Bag tags are going up in Saugeen Shores.
Council is looking to make up an $80,000 shortfall in collection costs.
Likely starting in April a 50-cent increase will be phased in for bag tags, bringing the cost to $2.00 a tag.
During preliminary budget discussions, council voted 6-2 in favour of the hike, with Diane Huber and Fred Schildroth voting against the measure.
Councillor Marcel Legault was not at the meeting.
Councillor Taun Frosst begrudgingly voted in favour of the increase.
He says he voted yes on the premise that the tags would not increase in price for the next three or four years.
It’s been three years since the tag system was brought in and there hasn’t been an increase since inception.
Meanwhile, Vice Deputy Mayor Doug Gowanlock, who voted in favour, says the tag system has diverted a lot of garbage from the dump but it’s resulted in pick up revenue falling short to the tune of $80,000.
Gowanlock says in the bigger picture, a 50-cent hike in tags is far cheaper than filling our landfill and spending millions creating a new dump.
