Saugeen Shores council has had an advance look at the budget request for the Saugeen Rail Trail Association.
President Bruce Alexander says they’re asking for a 15 hundred dollar increase from last year, to 15 thousand dollars.
It represents pretty well all of the 20 thousand dollar annual budget for the rail trail association.
Alexander says the money will be used for general upgrading of the trail system but more specifically to help build washroom facilities at the River Street Trailhead area in Port Elgin.
He says one of their continuing goals is to solve the dilemma of pedestrians and bicyclists crossing busy Highway 21 at the Hi-Berry Farms area.
Alexander says they’ve talked to police about putting up “reduce speed” signs but they’ll also do a survey on exactly how many people really use that crossing where you have to dodge highway-speed traffic.
Meanwhile, Saugeen Shores Councillor Taun Frosst, who is serving on the Rail Trail Association as town rep, says he doesn’t forsee any issue in approving the budget request.
The town goes into budget sessions February 8th and 9th.
