Owen Sounds’ Homeless Initiative — “Safe N Sound” — may struggle to stay open in 2011 if Grey County pulls the plug on its’ support.
Community Support Co-ordinator Richard Suchow says the two thousand dollar a month grant from the County runs out in a few months and if that money disappears — it will be tough to replace it.
Suchow says the good news is, Grey County officials are taking with Safe N Sound — getting details on just where that money has been spent.
He is optimistic funding will be extended and in the meantime they are planning some fund-raisers to help support the homeless initiative.
Over the holidays, Safe N Sound was being criticized by Randy Kennedy at the Victorious Living Centre for being closed between Christmas and New Years.
Suchow says the “Space” on 8th Street East was closed for a few days but emergency services were always available.
He also says they will review how they get the message out to homeless people in Owen Sound, so no one spends a night sleeping in a snowbank again.
That happened over the holidays outside a church in the city.
Safe N Sound provides a free meal, use of a computer to look for work, use of a washer and dryer and help finding a place to stay. (It is not a homeless shelter)
