It pays to recycle — literally.
2010 was a good year for BASWRA, the Bruce Area Solid Waste Recycling Association.
Surging commodity prices resulted in a 600 thousand dollar surplus for the cooperative recycling agency.
BASWRA is made up of seven of Bruce County’s eight municipalities — Northern Bruce Peninsula is not a member.
Thanks to the surplus, Board member Chris Peabody says BASWRA members will experience a zero per cent increase this year.
BASWRA is also expanding its programming to allow for additional recycling items such as clam shell plastics.
The rest of the money will be set aside in reserves towards a new building fund.
Peabody says BASWRA has outgrown its current facility and needs room to grow.
BASWRA serves 32 thousand households in Bruce County.
This represents 87 per cent of all Bruce County households.
