The town of Hanover is breathing a sigh of relief. As we first told you this week — Canada Post will not be leaving downtown Hanover.
It was an uphill battle — but as Mayor Kathi Maskell puts it — one worth fighting.
Maskell says Hanover’s downtown will continue to thrive thanks to a last minute decision by Canada Post to move their office to the former LCBO building.
Canada Post had considered moving out of the downtown to the Hanover Mall.
Maskell says this is a major victory for downtown merchants who would have suffered from the loss of foot traffic had the post office left the downtown.
She adds many senior citizens and those without cars would have also been negatively impacted by the move.
The town of Hanover, the Chamber and the DIA all publicly opposed the move — as did many residents who signed petitions against it.
Canada Post plans to set up shop in the former LCBO building this Spring.
The Post Office houses 16 employees, two contractors and provides mail for over 48 hundred residents.
