Students at Kincardine District Secondary School are going to find out what happens when you’re forced to evacuate your home due to a power outage, fire, flood, winter storm, or any other natural disaster.
The Kincardine Emergency Services Department will be hosting it’s first ever Student Survivor Challenge at the high school overnight — starting tonight.
Community Emergency Management Coordinator Roberta Trelford says the gymnasium will be turned into a mock evacuee reception centre.
Trelford says each of the 25 students will be assigned a cot and a 72 hour survival kit and they’ll have to live out the scenario of a blackout.
There will also be several workshops throughout the night including training with fire extinguishers, automated electronic defibrillators, and Bruce Power will come in to present its nuclear safety plans.
The Red Cross will also participate, and the Salvation Army will bring breakfast in the morning for the participants.
Trelford hopes it will be a fun and educational experience for the students, and teach them how to be ready for any type of emergency.
Emergency Management Ontario created this preparedness exercise in 2009, and students in high schools across the province have been participating in similar workshops ever since.
