The man charged in connection with the shooting death of a Lion’s Head doctor has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.
66 year old Allan Wayne Powney pleaded guilty in Owen Sound court on Monday to second degree murder in the death of Doctor Henry Janssen in January 2008.
Powney admitted he was enraged over the fact Doctor Janssen’s wife Lynn ended their two year affair.
And he waited for Doctor Janssen to return from work to his Lion’s Head area home and shot him in his truck with a sawed off shotgun.
Powney said in a shaky voice in court Wednesday — “I just killed him, I killed my friend, and I don’t want to be this person anymore.”
Janssen’s daughter, Rebecca, tells Bayshore Broadcasting News it’s bitter to think her father’s life is only worth ten years, but says it’s a relief for her family the case didn’t have to go to trial.
She called the day “a cold and a broken hallelujah.”
Court also heard victim impact statements from Doctor Janssen’s son David and wife Lynn who said she lived in fear of Powney since he was released on bail in May of 2008.
She talked about how Powney sent out word of her husbands death to friends in the community via email just hours after Powney took her husbands life.
Doctor Janssen’s son David also gave an victim impact statement saying he sat across the dinner table from Powney just two weeks prior to the murder and has never been the same since that brutal day.
