It’s still a wait and see issue for Bruce Power.
There’s been no word from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) on whether or not Bruce Power will be allowed to ship old generators overseas for recycling.
Bruce Power Community and Government Relations Manager Ross Lamont says the CNSC continues to study material and presentations made by groups and private citizens who are against the project and the presentations made by those in support of the plan.
Lamont says Bruce Power has no problem with the matter being studied slowly.
He says the safety issues of the project need to be addressed and they will await the CNSC decision.
The hearings on the matter were held last November and Lamont doesn’t believe the CNSC has put the issue on the backburner because of the winter weather which wouldn’t allow shipping at this time anyway.
The 100 tonne generators are considered low-level nuclear waste.
Bruce Power wants to transport the cargo by road to the Owen Sound harbour where they will be loaded on a ship that will travel the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway system, on its way to Sweden.
