Grey County is poised to end 2010 in a surplus budget position.
County Council has approved a report from Director of Finance Kevin Weppler that details the budget and projects the financial status through the end of the year.
The total projected surplus is over 400 thousand dollars ($440,500), paced by an expected surplus of 456 thousand in the finance and personnel department.
Weppler says this is due to supplementary taxation and tax write-offs worth an estimated 600 thousand dollars.
He says this is a sign of continued growth in the county, which is good news.
There is also projected surplus in the planning and community development department.
But there are projected shortfalls in the social services and transportation and public safety departments.
Weppler says the final numbers for 2010 likely won’t be ready until at least late February — but they should be finalized in time for 2011 budget deliberations.
Weppler says county staff have worked hard to set budgets and then live within them, and this will continue as Grey County prepares for its those deliberations.
Grey County had a tax decrease in 2010 — but Warden Arlene Wright has cautioned this will most likely not be possible to duplicate.
