Bruce Peninsula OPP have a warning for those of you who use the Internet or are thinking of using it to purchase or sell property.
Make every effort to confirm that you are dealing with a legitimate person.
The warning comes after a 21 year old woman lost 550 dollars by sending money to a person in Niagara Falls, presumably as a security deposit for an apartment she wanted to rent in Barrie.
She had found the vacancy in an advertisement on Craigslist.
Once the money was received, there was no further contact from the fraudster.
A second complaint came when a person received an email from a supposed Hong Kong banker who wanted to transfer money to a local resident.
To get the cash the resident would only have to disclose some personal banking information and the cash would be forthcoming.
This type of scam leads to Identity theft.
These types of international Internet frauds are almost impossible to investigate and those involved will probably never be identified or prosecuted.
Police say even in this Technology driven world, the old saying, “Buyer Beware” still applies.
