Cooking this weekend for New Years? Drinking this weekend as well?
These two don’t mix according to Fire Prevention Officer for the Owen Sound Fire & Emergency Services Tom Potter.
Not only does Potter have this thought, but he has statistics to back him when it comes to careless habits in the kitchen while cooking.
Potter says the Ontario Fire Marshall reports the week prior to December 17th — there were three deaths in our province from fires caused by careless cooking and they also seriously injured two more.
Potter says at this time of the year it is easy to neglect what is on the stove and that leads to more kitchen fires.
Especially when cooking with fats and oils fire seem to erupt the easiest and Potter says to be prepared.
He adds having a fire extinguisher, a box of baking soda and a cookie sheet on hand will help should things get out of hand.
Also, Potter says to avoid consuming alcohol if you are cooking as it can make your reflexes slower.
But if you do run into trouble and cannot contain the fire Potter says get out and call 9-1-1.
