A non-profit organization that helps the homeless in Owen Sound is wondering what taxpayers are getting for their money.
Pastor Randy Kennedy says while the “Victorious Living Centre” receives no government money — Safe N Sound does but it is closed for the holidays.
Kennedy tells Bayshore Broadcasting News a sign is posted at Safe N Sound that says it is closed from Christmas Eve until January 3rd and has a list of numbers to call if you need help.
One of the numbers listed is for the Victorious Living Centre, which he finds ironic since they operate through donations from various churches in the area.
Pastor Kennedy wonders why thousands of dollars go each year to a shelter that is closed, while a homeless man was found huddled in the snow outside his church on Christmas Day.
Pastor Kennedy is upset that Safe N Sound receives two thousand dollars a month from Grey County to help the homeless in our area, and then is closed for 10 days in the winter months.
Victorious Living Centre operates a drop in centre, offers meals daily, helps with transitional housing and runs an emergency shelter for 15 people.
Kennedy says while they have been operating for 10 years, former Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners was thrilled with the opening of Safe N Sound — saying it was needed for a long time.
