Changes could be on the way for Hanover’s Dam.
A Collingwood company wants to harness the power of the Hanover Dam.
Timber Run Hydropower Corporation wants to retrofit the existing dam to accommodate a small scale hydroelectric turbine.
Deputy Mayor Bob White says the proposed project would create clean green electricity for the province.
The dam should be able to create enough energy to power up to 250 homes.
The low head mini hydro ‘run of the river’ station would divert water that currently falls unused over the dam into a turbine capable of generating 250 kilowatts of renewable electricity.
Timber Run Hydropower hope to strike a long term lease with Hanover.
Before this happens though, White says the company will have to gain numerous government and Saugeen Conservation Authority approvals.
Once that happens, he says Hanover will sit down with Tiber Run Hydropower to discuss a possible agreement.
In the meantime Hanover has signed a memorandum agreement granting Timber Run Hydropower access rights to the Hanover Dam site.
If all goes as planned the project could begin as soon as 2011 with electricity being produced by 2012.
The proposed project is intended to take advantage of Ontarios recently implemented Feed-in-Tariff (FIT) program.
