Today is a day that for many in Grey Bruce marked a sign of closure.
It is six years ago today that utilities manager Stan Koebel was sentenced to one year in jail for his role in the tainted-water tragedy in Walkerton.
Meanwhile his foreman brother Frank Koebel received nine months of house arrest.
The Walkerton water tragedy back in May 2000 claimed the lives of 7 people and made thousands of other ill.
The ruling handed down by Justice Dennis O’Connor claimed that the tragedy could have been prevented by proper chlorination.
This year the new location of the Walkerton Clean Water centre was opened and is considered world class facility with state of the art technology to train and educate operators of drinking water systems.
Meanwhile – back in May during the 10th anniversary of the tragedy there were still some 200 unresolved claims.
Our provincial government the government has spent 70 million dollars resolving claims related to the crisis from May of 2000.
