In the excitement of decorating the house for the holidays, it’s important to keep safety in mind.
Fire Prevention Inspector Greg Nicol with the Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services says the most basic thing is to keep the house tidy.
He says often when they investigate fires, housekeeping is a major issue, and at this time of year we’re adding more clutter to the mix.
Nicol says to make sure anything we set up is not close to a heat source like baseboard heaters, furnaces, wood stoves, or candles.
When it comes to picking out a Christmas tree, Nicol says it’s important to get a fresh tree if you’re choosing a real one, and to ensure it is watered and maintained carefully so it doesn’t dry out.
Nicol adds when setting up lights, don’t overload an outlet.
He says the key is to use extension cords, and make sure they’re certified for outdoor use when hanging lights outside.
Nicol says the Fire Marshall’s office reports an increase of emergency calls and fire deaths around the holiday season, but he says that could be due to a number of reasons.
He says one big factor is alcohol, and it’s not just drinking and driving he’s worried about.
With all of the parties and hosting we do at this time of year, Nicol says it’s important to be responsible about drinking and engaging in other activities like cooking.
