There’s definitely lots of snow to clear off your sidewalks, driveways, and walkways today.
Since midnight, we’ve seen 40 centimetres of snow fall in the Owen Sound region, and through out parts of Grey-Bruce.
But before you run outside with your shovel — Health Promoter Jason Weppler with the Grey-Bruce Health Unit reminds you that you could very easily injure yourself.
He says because many of us aren’t as active as we think we are, there is the potential to hurt your back or other muscles.
Weppler says before you head out to shovel the snow, make sure you warm up your muscles, and stretch the larger ones in your legs, shoulders, and lower back.
He says it’s also important to use proper technique, and lift with your legs when clearing heavy loads of snow.
As for your shovel, Weppler says it should be an appropriate size for you, and lightweight.
He says the best thing would be to stay in good shape year-round so that we aren’t hurting ourselves when we get a big dumping of heavy snow.
And if you’re already feeling the aches, Weppler says to get some ice on the sore muscles first, do some light stretching, and then take it easy for the next 48 hours.
