Owen Sound is taking over ownership of part of highway 26 on the East side of the city.
Council met in special session Friday to pass a bylaw, after they learned the province was moving to turn over control of the section from 18th Avenue to 28th Avenue East.
Director of Operations, John Johnston says Owen Sound has wanted to get control of that section of road for some time.
He says it allows the city to limit the amount of entrances onto the roadway, and to reduce the speed limit.
Although Owen Sound will control Highway 26 from Montana’s out to Van Dolder’s, the MTO will continue to clear it of snow this winter in a separate agreement, for one dollar.
The special session of council yesterday morning was called to dedicate the roadway as a connecting link, and make it part of the city’s roadway system.
Johnston says the city has been trying to designate the road as a connecting link since 2007.
