The holidays are a time for family to gather and celebrate.
But for a family member with Alzheimer’s, it can also be a time of confusion.
The Alzheimer’s Society of Grey-Bruce is holding a workshop tonight called “Simply Celebrating” to help caretakers plan ahead for the busy holiday season.
Public Education Coordinator Sandra Hong says people who suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia can get overwhelmed in large gatherings and it’s important that the family is sensitive to that to help make it a happy time for all.
At the workshop, Hong will provide tips and activities that will include all family members.
Hong says to be sensitive to those with memory difficulties, it’s a good idea to watch your wording of phrases.
For example, instead of saying, “Do you remember?” , start off instead with “I remember.”
Hong says you should also try to plan family activities earlier in the day, as people confusion and anxiety may set in as the day gets later.
She says it’s also important to inform extended family members of the situation so they can be sensitive and help relieve some of the stresses.
The workshop will have more advice and activities you can do during the holiday season, as well as supports for caregivers who may be feeling stressed out.
The seminar begins at 7 PM at the Alzheimer’s Society office on 2nd Ave East in Owen Sound.
