Grey County Council will begin a new term this month, but it will have a whole new look.
Four councillors were defeated at the polls in the municipal elections in October, and another four have simply called an end to their political careers.
In the latter category are Chatsworth Mayor Howard Greig and Hanover Deputy Mayor Gerald Rogers, who have a combined 43 years on county council.
Greig says when he first joined the county in December 1988, it was comprised of 37 members.
That was before amalgamations of more than a decade ago that turned Grey’s 26 municipalities into the nine of today.
Greig served two terms as Grey County’s warden, in 1993 and in 2000. He was succeeded the first time by Rogers, who had one term as warden in 1994.
Rogers is the longtime deputy mayor and former reeve of Hanover, and says County and Town Council have provided him with an education over and above his extensive professional education.
A member of county council since December 1989, Rogers says he has enjoyed municipal politics because it has allowed him to intimately share the concerns of his fellow ratepayers.
Also leaving the Council table are Brian Mullin and Dave Fawcett from Grey Highlands, both were defeated in October’s election.
Also not returning to County Council are Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners, West Grey Deputy Mayor Dan Sullivan, retiring Southgate Mayor Don Lewis and Meaford Deputy Mayor Mike Traynor.
