Transport Canada is planning to hold a public meeting next week to look at turning ownership of the Federal harbour over to the City of Owen Sound.
There have been on-going discussions for the past few years and the city is interested in taking control of the harbour, but at the same time is worried about environmental issues.
The information meeting is from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM next Tuesday at the Bayshore Community Centre.
Owen Sound Community Development Manager Steve Furness says it is just the next step in the process of transferring ownership, but he says the city has not committed to anything.
Furness says the meeting next week is part of the Environmental process.
The city has told Transport Canada it is not prepared to take over huge environmental issues with the harbour and those need to be addressed first.
So far, Transport Canada has not answered the environmental questions put to it by Owen Sound.
But Furness says having control of the harbour would be beneficial as the city moves toward developing the waterfront.
A number of waterfront projects are in the works over the next few years including condos and commercial developments.
Furness wouldn’t predict when ownership of the harbour might be transferred, saying discussions have already been underway for a few years and they have a long way to go yet.
