Owen Sound’s Senior of the Year is John Newton.
Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners says Newton is “a remarkable volunteer”, citing his work on behalf of the Golden K Kiwanis, Meals on Wheels, the Sydenham Bruce Trail Club, Big Brothers, the Owen Sound Field Naturalists, the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority, the Georgian Bay Symphony, the Odd Job Squad at St. George’s Anglican Church, school breakfast clubs and the day surgery department at the city’s hospital.
Newton is a retired pilot and sales representative who’s lived in Owen Sound for 22 years.
Newton says he enjoys helping people and takes a lot of satisfaction from the appreciation those people show to him.
Newton says he is pleased with the recognition from the city, but says he has no idea who nominated him for this honour.
