A Bruce County woman has been recognized by Safe Communities Canada.
Barbara Goetz has received the 2010 Safe Communities Canada Founder’s Award for work she has done around the community to advocate children’s safety.
Goetz is the Manager of Communications for Event Planning at Bruce Power, and has been the lead for the Off The Job Safety Team, and led the 2003 Living Snow Fence initiative.
She has also served as co-chair of the Bruce Safe Communities since its inception in 2006, and last year won a leadership award for it for the work with the children’s safety festival.
The county was also designated a safe community by the organization.
The latest project she’s working on is the Saugeen Valley Children’s Safety Village.
Goetz says having three sons and a husband who is a school teacher has driven her to make her community as safe as possible.
She says it’s important for everyone to know their rights at the workplace, and off the job.
She says she wants to make sure everybody comes and goes everyday from their job or school.
Goetz says she’s very excited to be recognized with this award, but stresses she only won it because of the teams she works with.
Goetz credits all of the volunteers for winning this award, and says it should go to all of them and not just her.
She says there are 32 community partners such as Red Cross, St. John’s Ambulance and the local school boards are what .
A special dinner will be held at the Lakeshore Recreation Centre in Port Elgin on December 2nd, to honour the volunteers that helped.
