The traditional lighting of the community Christmas tree in Port Elgin has taken place.
About 50 or so kids and grown-ups took in the lighting of the tree at Coulter’s Parkette in downtown Port Elgin on Thursday night.
5 year old Lauren Gibbons was really excited because she knew that soon Santa would pay her a visit.
3 year old Lewie Fredericks of Port Elgin helped Mayor Mike Smith light the tree and he said he wanted a “bumblebee hat” for Christmas.
When asked if he has been good he replied “A little bit.”
Just prior to the lighting of the tree, Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith brought greetings from the municipality and hoped everyone had a safe and wonderful holiday season.
Mayor Smith says for him personally, he doesn’t really need anything for Christmas except his family and friends.
The lighting of the tree kicked off the Saugeen Shores Chamber of Commerce Shopper’s Night where stores stayed open a little longer to start the holiday shopping season.
The same ceremony will be held next Thursday in Southampton during Sparkles Night.
The event will be held in front of the Olde Town Hall at 6:30 PM.
