Grey Bruce farmers and producers are learning how to market safe and healthy foods.
The Grey Bruce Health Unit hosted a workshop Monday that served as a brainstorming session so producers and marketers could talk about what’s working and what’s not in terms of advertising their products.
One initiative that was discussed was “on the farm marketing” — where people come to the farm to purchase products.
Producer Don Gillepsie says he is considering it, so he was glad to be at the workshop to hear other producers successes or failures.
Guest Speaker and Organic Vegetable Grower Ann Slater says on-line marketing is something producers are starting to use more often.
And although most business people try to cut out the middle man, Slater says farmers are looking the opposite direction.
She says having that middle man in your corner can help you get the price you need to survive.
Health Unit Program Manager Denna Leach says the workshop is in line with their “Buy Local” campaign in Grey Bruce.
And she says they’ve partnered with FarmStart, the Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario and the Grey Bruce Local Food Project to provide more avenues of support.
Although there’s no future workshop scheduled, Leach believes the Health Unit will hold more down the road, especially because they had such a strong turnout at Monday’s session.
