After five years of lobbying and planning, South Bruce OPP are finally going to get a new home in Walkerton.
A sod turning event was held Friday to mark the occasion.
Inspector Detachment Commander Bill Klym says the new South Bruce OPP Facility wont come a moment too soon.
He says the current Brockton OPP office is bursting at the seams with 25 officers crammed into a building that was designed in the 1980s for a maximum of 17 officers.
The new 12 thousand square foot facility will be 65 per cent bigger than the current OPP building and will offer the modern infrastructure to meet the technology requirements of todays policing.
Police Board Chair Charlie Reidl calls the 3 million dollar facility an investment in the community.
For Reidl its a dream come true, the Police Board have been campaigning for this project for five years.
Two Police Commissioners and two Ministers later he says its exciting to see the project finally get underway.
The new facility will include: and administration area with public reception, evidence vaults, a new fingerprint room, three holding cells, a multi purpose boardroom and a secure compound to accommodated seized vehicles.
The project is one of 14 new detachments, regional headquarters and forensic identification units being constructed across Ontario.
