A clear blue sky and plenty of sunshine was the backdrop for this year’s Remembrance Day ceremony in Port Elgin.
Hundreds of children and adults, along with veterans of all ages attended the Cenotaph ceremonies to remember the fallen.
World War II navy veteran Ralph Stewart of Port Elgin says he was thrilled to see all the children that had come out.
Stewart says we can learn from our past mistakes in the hopes that the future might be brighter and more peaceful.
Another navy veteran Bob Maas said it’s important to see the children because a lot of them don’t believe what the veterans have to say.
Maas says children today see war on television one day and the next day it’s gone.
He says real life doesn’t work that way.
Similar ceremonies were held throughout Bruce County this morning including Southampton, Kincardine and Tiverton.
Earlier today — Students at Saugeen District Secondary sent out messages of peace.
700 paper peace doves with messages of peace written on them were placed on the school’s front lawn.
