Members of First United Church in Owen Sound are hoping to see not just the light, but a lot of sunshine.
That is because the church on Monday begins the process of installing a number of electricity generating solar panels on the church roof to generate power which will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority.
Church Council Member Scott Wilson says 52 solar panels will be put on the sanctuary roof of the church at 4th Avenue West and 21st Street West.
Wilson says the cost of the installation will be in the 80 thousand dollar range and the rate they will be paid for producing power works about to about 10 per cent of their investment a year.
He hopes they can pay that off in about five years time, and then the church can start to generate revenue from the installation.
Wilson says the Church has a 20 year contract to provide power to OPA.
He says this idea initially came from the Church’s Green Group committee that was looking at ways of helping the environment and making a little money as well.
Wilson says its taken almost nine months to get to the point of starting to install the solar panels.
First United is the second church in Owen Sound to harvest solar energy to generate electricity.
Last December, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Owen Sound installed a number of solar panels on its roof.
