South Bruce Grey Health Centre’s plans for the future planning and decision-making at its four hospital sites, was not bit on the agenda of Tiverton residents.
A meeting held in Tiverton on Wednesday attracted a handful of interested spectators at best.
CEO and President of the SBGHC Paul Davies walked those attending through the process the board of directors has set out for the four hospital sites.
Residents were invited to attend the meeting armed with questions and comments.
Kincardine resident Ian Mitchell did just that calling for the centralization of services to end.
Mitchell contends that if centralization is saving money in one area, it’s costing patients money to take advantage of the services because they have to travel to other locations for that specialized service.
Mitchell would like to see more services available at each hospital.
He says frankly residents in smaller communities simply don’t get the same bang for health buck like they do in Toronto.
Davies, meanwhile, admits there is centralization but that the identified primary care services like emergency departments, lab and x-rays is available in all four locations of SBGHC.
He says some secondary services that would be found normally in centres bigger than the ones serviced by SBGHC, can’t be provided in all four sites.
Those should be balanced over all four sites.
The Tiverton meeting was the second of eight that will be held throughout the region.
On the sparse turnout in Tiverton, Davies suggests that there’s no contentious issue that would bring out the public.
He admits that’s not always the case but it’s the only explanation he has.
Future meetings will be held in Durham on November 25th; Mildmay, November 29th; Ripley December 1st; Walkerton December 6th; Kincardine December 8th and Paisley December 13th.
