The Tom Thomson Trail Group and their partner Bruce Grey Trail Network have expanded area trails thanks in large part to a 35 thousand dollar grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Because of the grant a new 350 meter trail has been created west of the 28th Avenue East road allowance, which was unopened.
The new trail was needed because heavy farm vehicles and 4X4’s and other vehicles cause damage especially when wet .
The new solid, non-motorized trail has been cordoned off with boulders to prevent vehicular damage in the future .
The remainder of the trail has been resurfaced from the utility corridor up to 24th Side Road as well as the section of the CP rail bed from the soccer complex to 26th St. East.
The grant allowed for significant upgrades in the trail bed within the city of Owen Sound as did funds raised by other interested groups to develop the trail to a higher standard.
The Tom Thomson Trail Group has been working at developing trail route signage between Owen Sound and Meaford monitoring and maintaining current trails, acquiring approvals for new off road sections of trail, building new sections and fundraising.
Also maintaining positive relationships with municipalities and adjacent landowners.
Bruce-Grey – Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch joined trail members to survey the new trails calling it a hallmark for our area and this addition will give people a new option for getting outside.
