Quitting smoking is often hard, so the Province and the Health Unit are working to make it a little easier.
The Smoking Treatment for Ontario Patients program, or “STOP”, has already attracted a lot of attention.
In fact, the Owen Sound workshop is already full.
The program utilizes Nicotine Replacement Therapy, which basically introduces nicotine into the body without the use of tobacco products.
The program is being held in partnership between the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, the Ministry of Health Promotion, and the Health Unit.
Grey Bruce Health Promoter Crystal Ferguson says tobacco use is especially high in Grey Bruce; 1 in 5 adults in the region smoke.
Ferguson adds cardiovascular disease and cancer are the leading causes of death in Grey Bruce.
In addition to kicking the smoking habit, the STOP program encourages participants to make broader lifestyle changes to improve their health, as smoking often accompanies other unhealthy factors such as poor nutrition and inactivity.
There are still spots open for the Hanover workshop which happens on Thursday November 4th.
