Bruce County is considering a bylaw to fight speeding abuse on our rail trail by unauthorized users of motorized vehicles.
Director of Planning Christ LaForest hopes council will consider a bylaw to put more teeth into subsequent prosecution.
He says right now, they can charge people under the Trespass Act but a bylaw would allow for the creation of fines if found guilty.
LaForest says local ATV clubs have been doing a good job of regulating their own riders but some non-club members have been speeding on the trails.
He says they’re ready to ratchet up the enforcement.
Local police departments says if a bylaw was in place, enforcement would be easier.
LaForest is also looking to utilize Bylaw Enforcement officers in communities that have them.
The rail trail extends from Saugeen Shores to Mildmay.
The call for a bylaw was part of an overall plan to review the management of the trail.
LaForest says they need a better communication process on who does what and when and who pays for it to keep the rail trail maintained.
The bylaw will be considered by the new County Council.
