A special ceremony this afternoon at the Royal Canadian Legion in Owen Sound, as 10 more local veterans from the Second World War and Korean War will be honoured.
The 10th annual Honouring your local Veterans program is one of the longest running programs of its kind in Canada that recognizes the service of Canadians in foreign theatres of war.
Manager of the Billy Bishop Home and Museum, Mary Smith says more than 70 local World War One, World War Two and Korean War vets have been honoured over the past 10 years.
She says when the program initially began, many of the Veterans were reluctant to speak about their war experiences to pass them on to the next generation.
However Smith says more of the Vets are now eager to share their experiences with the younger generation so they too will know what these vets did to ensure Canada remains a democratic society.
Besides honouring the 10 local Veterans, Smith says the highlight of the event will be an address by the Veterans Ombudsman Colonel Pat Stogran.
He has been an outspoken advocate for veterans since he first assumed this position three years ago, and because of his criticism of the government, his position will expire at the end of November.
Smith says the 10 veterans to be honoured this year are Elmer Barfoot, Jack Bowers, Murray Gibbons, Daphne Hirst, Bob Johnston, Donald McSporran, Ken Reimer, John Rowe, Ken Smale and Arthur Wragg.
Smith says all tickets to the event now have been sold out.
