Ontario’s Transportation Minister has seen first hand the construction work on Highway 6 from Mar to Tobermory — and the new bike lanes.
Kathleen Wynne says crews will be finished by the end of the year.
The original price tag for the facelift was 20 million dollars, but that will grow now that metre wide bike lanes have been added.
Wynne says there’s an incremental cost to do the extra metre, but the Province believes in terms of safety, it’s worth the cost.
Bruce Grey Owen Sound MPP Bill Murdoch says it took a very long time to get the improvements to Highway 6 going, so he’s pleased it didn’t take as long to get the bike lanes.
Murdoch feels our community can become a cycling destination.
The new bike lanes will become a trial project for the provinces new active transportation strategy.
Minister Wynne says the project is a first, so they will monitor usage because other parts of the Province think it could also work for them.
You will also now notice Highway 6 has “Share the Road” signage — Wynne says the hope is to shift the culture surrounding vehicle and bicycle traffic.
