Construction on Owen Sound’s new 38 million dollar Recreation Centre continues and according to the City Project Manager — it is right on schedule.
Brad McRoberts says structural steel for the arena portion of the building is now going up and concrete foundations for the swimming pool and fitness section is being poured as well.
He says its hoped that the arena portion of the project can be completely enclosed by the time the snow flies and that is when they will begin working on the two ice surfaces laying refrigeration pipe and the floors.
McRoberts says construction on the aquatic and fitness centre site is not moving as quickly as the arena by virtue of the fact a lot of the work is taking place below ground with the formation of concrete foundations.
He says so far they have been very fortunate with the weather and the rain in September had little impact on construction activity and they should be able to work right through the winter months.
McRoberts says by the time the deadline for federal funding to end arrives, the facility will be about 40 per cent complete.
He says what people will see at Victoria Park will be a shell of a building, with a lot of electrical, mechanical and plumbing work taking place inside.
It’s expected the new recreation centre will be complete in early 2012.
