The provincial NDP calls Bruce Power’s proposal to ship 16 decommissioned steam generators to Sweden for recycling “hare-brained.”
Leader Andrea Horwath says it’s a risk not worth taking, and she’s calling on the Liberal government to do something about it.
Although anything related to nuclear energy falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government, Horwath says Premier Dalton McGuinty has an obligation to protect our Great Lakes.
She says there are so many diverse voices opposing the plan that McGuinty should take note and put a stop to the shipment.
The provincial NDP have always maintained that nuclear energy is not the way to go for Ontario.
But Horwath says since it’s a reality, we need to deal with nuclear waste on our own land and not ship it somewhere else.
She says we need to learn from past mistakes and stop going down a road with no solution.
