Bruce Peninsula OPP are warning area residents of a fraud involving stolen cheques.
A South Bruce Peninsula resident advertised a vehicle for sale on the website KIJIJI.
He got a cheque for more than the value of the truck, and when he contacted the buyer about the extra cash, he was told to send back the extra money.
The buyer wanted the money sent to the United Kingdom.
That’s when the man selling the vehicle got suspicious and contacted police.
The Police investigation revealed that cheques had been stolen from someone in Alberta, and were used in numerous fraud attempts out west, in Chatham, and now locally in the Town of South Bruce Peninsula.
The Police say Internet fraud is an ongoing problem and you should be cautious while using the Internet.
You should be suspicious of people overpaying for online purchases then asking for the extra money to be sent somewhere using Western Union or other similar services.
