There is a new competition out there for Grain Farmers in Ontario.
Building on the success of its Spring Wheat and Soybean challenges, the Grain Farmers of Ontario are now launching their new Winter Wheat Challenge.
Director of Research and Market Development Crosby Devitt tells Bayshore Broadcasting News this competition will be similar to the other challenges with the farmer producing the best yielding milling quality wheat will win a cash prize.
Devitt says to compete, the field size must be a minimum of 10 acres and the harvested plot must be a minimum of 1.5 acres.
He says any certified variety of milling quality winter wheat is eligible and the deadline for a grain producers to enter is April 1st of next year.
Devitt says besides the friendly competition to produce top quality winter wheat, this exercise also is a great opportunity for grain farmers right across the province to learn more about what other producers are going to improve their crops.
He says besides creating a dialogue among farmers, the Winter Wheat challenge also ties in developments taking place in the research area in terms of new strategies in fertilizer and seeing how farmers are trying out these new planting recommendations.
