Thousands of people right across Canada are trying to do their part to clean up rivers and streams in their neighbourhoods.
The Great Canadian Shoreline Clean up is underway and continues until Sunday September 26th.
In Grey Bruce and Simcoe Counties — a number of clean up sites have been targeted in such communities like Owen Sound, Hanover, Walkerton Collingwood and Wasaga Beach.
Rick Chappell is with the Ministry of Environment in Owen Sound and says Kelso Beach and the Sydenham River will be cleaned up this year.
The local clean up will get underway Thursday morning at 10 AM with volunteers meeting at the Grey Bruce Health Unit building.
He says were are fortunate that there is not a lot of litter in this region, but cigarette butts remain the top items cleaned up followed by food wrappers and plastic bags.
The Shoreline clean up began back in 1994 with a handful of Vancouver Aquarium Employees and volunteers who wanted to clean up their local shorelines.
This year there are more than one thousand clean up sites across the country, and 338 of them in Ontario.
