Sarnia-Lambton Tory MPP Bob Bailey’s private member’s bill calling for tax credits for farmers who donate unused food to local food banks has cleared another hurdle in the Legislature.
Bob Bailey’s proposed legislation has received support from all parties in the House in second reading debate.
Bill 78 now will now be reviewed by a standing committee of the Legislature before going to third and final reading.
The bill calls for producers to receive a non-refundable government tax credit of twenty-five per cent of the wholesale value of food they re-direct to food banks.
Over 25 million pounds of food every year are either thrown out or ploughed under by farmers because of imperfections that prevent the food from being accepted by supermarket chains.
