Opposition to a Bruce Power plan to ship decommissioned generators from Owen Sound to Sweden via the Great Lakes is picking up steam.
Sharen Skelly presented City Council on Monday night with a petition asking Council to deny Bruce Power a heavy-load permit — which it would need to transport the generators through the streets of Owen Sound.
Skelly says the petition had almost 250 names signed locally and online by people from as far away as Sweden.
She plans to continue to gather names and to present the petition again later this month at a Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission public hearing in Ottawa.
Although Bruce Power has made the rounds of local councils outlining their plans — Skelly notes they did not take questions from the public on any occasion.
And she points out the series of open houses also did not allow for open public comment.
Skelly says opposition to Bruce Power’s proposal is growing as more and more people become aware of initiatives like hers.
Skelly is aware that Owen Sound’s hands may be tied in relation to whether or not it can deny a heavy-load permit to Bruce Power.
She hopes that opposition to the overall plan will grow to such an extent that Bruce Power has to change its plans and come up with other alternatives.
Bruce Power has yet to apply for a heavy-load permit, so the city took no action on the petition other than to receive it.
Interested people who want to be notified when the company does apply for the permit are asked to contact the city clerk’s office.
