Grey County Council has declared its support for Bruce Power’s plan to ship steam generators to Sweden via local roads, the Owen Sound Harbour and the Great Lakes.
Council approved a resolution on Tuesday to send a letter of support to Michael Binder, the President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
The resolution cited Bruce Power’s proven track record for responsible environmental performance and safe operation.
It also noted the nuclear operators detailed presentations about its proposal to truck the generators one by one from its Tiverton-area facility to Owen Sound.
Owen Sound Mayor Ruth Lovell Stanners asked if Bruce Power would be held financially responsible if the heavy trucks transporting the generators damaged county roads along the way.
Georgian Bluffs Mayor Alan Barfoot, the chair of the transportation committee replied that the specialized trucks which will be used have so many axles in order to adequately distribute the weight of the 100 tonne generators, and that there should be no problem.
Barfoot says Bruce County has already passed a similar motion of support, as have some local municipalities.
Barfoot expects his own municipality will do the same.
