A farewell reception will take place today for Judy Beth Armstrong at the Owen Sound and North Grey Union Public Library.
Armstrong recently retired as chief librarian, ending a 33-year career with the library.
The come-and-go reception is from 5 PM to 7 PMin the basement auditorium.
Refreshments will be served and presentations will be made at 6 PM.
Armstrong, a graduate of the University of Toronto, has worked as a librarian for 35 years.
She was hired in 1977 to work at the Owen Sound library as its assistant director, and she replaced Andrew Armitage as chief librarian in 2000.
During her time in Owen Sound, Armstrong has been involved in a number of initiatives that still exist today — the Great Annual Book Sale, the Adult Learning Centre, the establishment of the library as a wireless internet hot spot, and many more.
The library under her direction has undergone several renovations and its evolution has allowed it to continue to be an important element of the city’s life, cultural and otherwise. Armstrong says she is quite proud of this fact as well.
She has been replaced as chief librarian by Cindy Weir, formerly the chief librarian at the Orangeville Public Library. Weir, who was selected after a nationwide search, began her duties in Owen Sound on Tuesday of this week.
Armstrong plans to spend more time with her family, travel, tackle a stack of unread books and work on her perennial garden.
