A new medical clinic west of the Owen Sound Harbour took a big step forward on Tuesday night.
City council agreed to sell a piece of land to Amico Properties Inc — a Windsor-area developer that intends to build the clinic just north of the Marine and Rail Museum and south of the skateboard park.
Amico already has an option on other property it needs for the development. It must also do an environmental cleanup of the site, an expensive process that led the city to accept less than market value for the 2.25 acres it is selling to Amico.
But a report from Owen Sound community services director Pam Coulter says Amico will provide documented remediation costs to the city.
If the cost is less than the discounted sale amount, the purchase price will be increased by the difference so the city will be adequately compensated for the property.
Cindy Prince, Amico’s vice president of development, says it’s hoped the remediation can begin soon.
But the final decision will be made by the Family Health Team, and she expects the team to publicly announce later this month a timeline for the project and perhaps introduce artwork of what the clinic will look like.
